Spread the love

In this post, we’re setting out to help you find your own productive study routine. While there are many tips and tricks that you can utilize to boost your performance while studying, the truth of the matter is that we are all different as students. We have to create our own routine! So, while you’ll have to fill in the blanks based on your own preferences and personality, let’s go over some of the most important things that can help you to improve your efficiency while studying.

In this article, we are going to discuss how to best set up your study environment, discuss planning, and other best practices like maintaining good health and setting realistic goals to ensure a positive feedback loop for your personal study routine.

1. Create a healthy Study Space

As part of creating a productive study routine, you’ll probably want to have a dedicated space for you to study in. Creating a healthy study space for yourself is probably one of the most important aspects of getting ready for long study hours.

Let’s face it, you are probably going to spend a whole lot of time in your study, so it does make sense to take the time to think about the desk you choose, the lighting that you’ll need, ensure you have a decent study chair so you don’t get any back pain. You also might want to decorate the space in such a way that you are inspired and excited to get started.

So let’s go over some of the things that you can do to make your study environment pleasant, comfortable & inspiring,  so it can help you boost your productivity during your study.

Study desk & Chair

Choosing the right sized study desk will ensure that you have the space you need depending on your own requirements. If you know that you’re going to use the computer to study make sure that you have measured the distance from your eyes to the screen.

In general, we probably opt for a desk that is at least 80 cm wide so that you can have a respectable distance from your eyes to the screen. so if you’re in the store and you see a desk that is only 60 centimeters wide,  you should probably not consider buying it even if it’s your favorite design. However, having said that, you know your own study situation best so choose the size of your desk accordingly.

After you have chosen the perfect desk, you’ll obviously have to consider finding a suitable matching office-type chair.  Here are some of the things you’ll want to look out for!  Find a chair with good lumbar support, make sure the chair is adjustable in height.  You’ll also have to decide whether you want arm support or if you prefer a chair without. Besides that, just make sure that you are comfortable. It will be your throne of your study kingdom!

Lighting:

  • Lighting influences performance

Another amazingly important factor is when creating the perfect study environment is lighting. While your personal preferences with respect to lighting obviously will influence your choices, in general, it is well accepted that a well-lighted room will enhance your concentration and encourage your critical & analytical thinking.

Having said that, if you are going for creativity, then you might consider preparing your working space to also have an option where you can dim the lighting. There have been scientific studies suggesting that creativity is boosted with dimmed lighting.

  • Lighting & Healthy eyes

Lighting it’s also really important when considering the number of hours that you’ll have to work on your computer, as this takes a heavy toll on your eyes.

So all in all, If you are lucky enough to be able to utilize natural light, then please let it come in fully and light up your study. If, on the other hand, you don’t have any natural light coming in then it is recommended that you invest in proper lighting for the above-mentioned reasons.

Great! you now have found your perfect desk, your perfect chair, you have invested in decent lighting. What else is there to do?

Personalizing the workspace

Enjoy the process of personalizing and organizing your workspace. From painting your walls to buying colorful or stylish binders for your papers, and adding a couple of pictures of your loved ones. If possible, this should become your favorite space in the house. Whatever works best, but make it inspiring to you!

Keep everything organized

Now that you have created the perfect environment to spend long hours studying with passion the things that you love, It’s probably a good idea to keep everything organized and clean.  So a quick tip is to promise yourself to always organize after you study. This will make it easier for you to disconnect whenever you think you’ve studied enough.  At the same time, when you have to get back at it, you’ll be happy that you can start fresh and add work at an organized desk.

2. De-Socialize

Engage your friends and family

As part of creating a good study routine, you might want to involve your friends and your family by letting them know that there are times when they should respect your study time.

In reality, getting started and getting into the ‘zone’ with your study session is probably the hardest part. So, whenever you’ve managed to get into that wonderful study ‘zone’, it can be really detrimental for you if you get distracted by someone, – albeit with their best intentions – right at that moment. So make sure that you explain to them – with love – why you need to be able to concentrate and not be disturbed.

Unplug from social media and other distractions

Now obviously, as part of making sure that we can focus on the task at hand, we should ensure that our mobile phone is switched off and that we only use our computer, the internet when needed as part of our studies. We all know how easy it is to let ourselves get distracted browsing on the internet or checking the latest messages on our phone.

3. Plan, But Remain Fluid!

Another essential part of creating a productive study routine is to plan our day effectively. In our motto, we would say “plan your day but remain fluid”.

Here is some of our best advice to plan your day as a student:

Start Early:

Unless you are really a night owl, and you know for yourself that you perform best during the night time,  we would suggest you start your study routine early. Not only will the early morning provide you with a peaceful environment to get started with your planned work, but it also works really motivating to know that you already have done a lot of great work before most people start with their day. Don’t be scared to start your day at 5 or 6 o’clock in the morning! you’d be surprised how easily your body adapts to getting up this early.

Choose a good format for your planning:

There are many formats that you can use to make your planning. whether you choose Google planning, desktop applications like Trello, a typical School diary, or any available app for your mobile phone, it doesn’t matter. just make sure you select the one which you really believe actually will help you to get good results.

My personal favorites are Trello and an old fashioned white piece of paper on which I create my weekly overview and my general to-do list.

Key benefits of planning:

Whether you are a natural Talent at planning or you feel that you’re really struggling with it, planning is something you can learn and you can get better at it!

A plan basically allows you to have a guide. a guide that is set up to optimize your resources -mainly your time – by creating actionable time frames for different tasks. it’s important that you create realistic tasks for yourself.

the reason here is simple. By creating a plan which you can actually execute you’ll be creating a positive feedback loop that will boost your motivation and commitment to your overall plan. with this in mind, be ready to adjust your schedule whenever necessary.

If you have a hard time planning the actual subject that you want to learn about, you could choose to create planning based on time blocks. essentially, you are dividing up your day into different time blocks.

Remain fluid & realistic and adapt your schedule when necessary.

3. Boost Your Immune System & Stay healthy!

When you are getting ready To achieve great results, you need to prepare accordingly. while studying at first glance appears to be a brain sport,  you can’t underestimate the importance of maintaining good health.

The best offense is a strong defense

The quality of your productivity, mental performance while studying will be closely linked to your overall state of mind and physical health.  So, while it is tempting to skip over daily exercise we’d strongly recommend that you don’t.

Actually, daily exercise will:

  • boost your immune system,
  • reduce your stress levels,
  • improve your concentration,
  • and balance your mood.

On top of that, it will likely help you to have a good & healthy appetite and it should also improve the quality of your sleep.
